Record Breaking Year

In December 2022, Giromax approached the end of H1 in our financial year, and it was another record-breaking year for us. In fact Q1 was our highest ever first quarter for sales! We continue to invest into our people and product development to bring you coating systems and solutions to meet our surveyors and contractors’ needs.

CASE STUDY
Contractor: D&D Coatings

Site: Industrial unit in Aston
Job: Commercial roof refurbishment with Giromax® Roofcoat (Metal) and Edgecoat
Size: 1,000 metre square

The roof measured approx. 1,000 m2 with obvious areas of corrosion that required treating with our Giromax® products. Challenges included the need for a good standard of early preparation and the weather, but due to the moisture tolerance within our products, work was only briefly postponed. Any loose coating was taken back to a firm edge, and all dirt, grease and moss were removed prior to the new paint system being applied. The roof is now weatherproof and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Our Giromax® Roofcoat (Metal) comes with a new 25-year guarantee, giving the client piece of mind for the future.

Site: Retail unit in Llanelli, Wales
Job: Commercial roof refurbishment with Giromax® Roofcoat (Metal) and Edgecoat
Size: 1,500 metre square

The roof measured approx. 1500 m2 and key areas of concern were the midlaps and the main sheets. The original plastisol coating was delaminating, exposing the galvanised steel sheet to the elements. The main challenge was the extreme heat. With temperatures in the high 30s, this affected when work could be carried out.

Our coatings cannot be applied over 35 degrees because the product cures before it has time to fully adhere to the substrate. Our D&D colleagues worked earlier in the day and at weekends to ensure a timely completion. Despite the extreme weather, the overall standard achieved was high. Aesthetically, the roof had a great finish with good encapsulation, and we could issue our 25-year guarantee.

CPD Sessions & Webinars

This year, Tom Kelly, our National Technical Services Manager, will be connecting with surveyors and specifiers of our Giromax® products. Tom can bring you up to speed on our latest product and process development, through in-person or online CPD sessions on cut edge corrosion. Lunch will be provided for the in-person sessions.

Giromax also continues to run CPD webinars online. Register for our next webinar today.

Festive Celebrations

Our team celebrated in style at the fabulous Kilworth House in Leicestershire. In beautiful festive surroundings, we danced the night away to live entertainment and made merry (but not too merry!).

We hope you all had a wonderful festive period and a well-deserved break too!

Changes at the Top...

In 2022, Giromax experienced its biggest change for many years with the sad loss of our founder, Roy Emmett. Myles Emmett has now stepped into his father’s shoes, taking up the position of Managing Director. Myles is supported by a strong team: Cherie Concannon as General Manager, Richard Sclater as Head of Technical Services, Caroline Evans as Operations Manager, and our excellent technical service and operations teams.

Coming Soon: Our Conference

We are very excited to announce our Giromax conference in May. The event will be held at the Belfry Golf Club, with leading industry speakers and our Giromax team members. If you enjoy playing golf, this is a historical course at international tour standard, and there will be an opportunity to play a round on the day. For more information, follow our social media and the latest news on our website.

Sharing Our Expertise with You

From March 2023, Giromax will be offering onsite spray training for our customers. This training will be carried out by a fully qualified sprayer, who is highly experienced in the application of our products. They will be available to attend sites and provide training on the correct way of applying the Giromax® product range.

Key benefits include helping your customers cut down on any costly snagging or remedial work to ensure contracts can be completed on budget. Also, this ensures we can confidently issue our Giromax product guarantees for your project.

Do you have an upcoming project and think your team would benefit from Giromax spray training? For more details, please contact us.

Charity

After the success of last year’s Rainbows Charity Ball, the Giromax team are looking forward to attending this year’s Champions Charity Ball.

We also continue to support local Under 14s and Under 15s football by sponsoring shirts and rain jackets. What’s more, we’ve noticed that the number of wins has increased since our shirts were first put on too!

Spreading Our Story & Expertise

We continue to share our expertise through our technical blogs, and last year we also published our three-part series, The Giromax Story. In these blogs, we looked at the life and achievements of our founder Roy Emmett. Here’s a selection of our current blogs:

Technical Talk: Knowing the coverage rates of coatings. In the latest edition of our Technical Talk blog series, we spoke to Giromax Technical Services Manager, Matt Ward, about the importance of good preparation and knowing the coverage rates of coatings, as well as some of his recent projects.

Can asbestos roof tiles have a protective coat added? This is a question we are regularly asked due to the complexities of dealing with asbestos cement. We discuss the various options when it comes to the refurbishment of asbestos roof tiles, including how to safely reclad or repaint surfaces.

What is Laminar Flake Technology

Giromax® products are based on the revolutionary laminar flake technology. Used in the marine coatings industry for many years on oil rigs and bridges, laminar flakes improve resistance against corrosion and other chemical contaminants. But how does this ground-breaking technology work and what are the benefits?

Glass flakes contained in coatings are traditionally 1 to 5 microns thick, creating a maze-like path for contaminates to pass through to the substrate. Standard pigments are spherical in shape, allowing UV light and moisture to pass through more easily.

The advantages of laminar flakes are the fact they are shaped like platelets. This creates extra hardness, resulting in strength where it’s needed and long-term chemical resistance. Laminar flake coatings are ideal for large areas, and as they have neutral mass, they won’t cause any structural issues to the coated areas.
